Hot News: Jaguar's Supercar on Hold?

While an expanded XF family and the launch a new F-Type were hinted at, Jaguar remains tight-lipped on the potential for a new supercar. At last year’s Detroit Motor Show, company boss Mike O’Driscoll suggested that the car was in the works.

According to our network of spies, the revolutionary sports car was being developed by the firm’s best engineers as a rival to the Audi R8. It was based on an all-new aluminium chassis, which was developed using the same know-how behind the XK and XJ. Early designs suggested the car would have aluminium panels stretched over an alloy and composite tub, while power would come from a tuned version of the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 from the XFR.

A mildly modified version of this engine has already propelled a near-stock XFR to 225mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the US. The new supercar would match this figure, while 0-60mph should take less than four seconds.

Originally, the plan to launch this 21st Century XJ220 would have seen the car revealed at a major motor show. However, it looks like work on the car has been suspended in favour of developing the new F-Type. For more details click here.
