The current 1-Series has often been criticized for having a back seat no full-sized adult would be comfortable in. However, the rear seat room in this new 2012 model is expected to be much improved. This may also see BMW finally release the Hatchback version of the 1-Series in the all-important U.S. market. A slightly longer wheelbase and wider track than the current model will almost certainly be present. The 2011 1-Series coupes and convertibles received a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic to the 135i, as well as a twin-scroll turbocharged six-cylinder engine. For 2012, we expect this drivetrain to remain in any 135 variants.
The existing BMW and PSA Group alliance, which already produces engines for MINI, will be building engines ranging from 1.4-liters to 3.0-liters for the next-gen 1-Series. Turbos are most certainly on the list, but an M version is said to be out of the question again. Instead, we’re expecting “green” models such as low-polluting diesels and hybrids.
