Reports have been circulating for months now at Motor Trend and elsewhere about Toyota's plan to forge ahead with its Lexus brand in Europe by developing a BMW 1 Series and Audi A3-fighter -- and now we have the first official evidence in the sketch, er, flesh.
Set to debut in concept form at next month's rapidly approaching 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the as yet unnamed premium compact segment vehicle is also being billed as an indication of the future design direction of the Lexus brand.
The concept will also serve as a technological showcase and is expected to feature a version of Toyota's hybrid powertrain as its means of motivation. Judging by the drawing, the concept looks to be a five-door hatch -- a key segment in Europe. The rendering has an aggressive stance, with a sharply raked greenhouse, sport-themed front fascia and wheels pushed out to the corners.
While the new compact is clearly aimed at the European market and may well end up staying across the pond, we also wouldn't be stunned if Toyota eventually brings the car -- which should slot neatly below the IS lineup -- to U.S. Lexus showrooms as well.
We'll know more about the vehicle when it's unveiled on Sept. 15 at Frankfurt or if information breaks earlier. What do you think, is this where Lexus needs to be headed as a brand?
