Spied Up Date: 2010 Volkswagen Golf R20

This is Volkswagen’s answer to Ford Focus RS: the Golf R20. While its competitors have waged a power war, the Golf GTI has been left behind with just 207bhp.

This car, fitted with a modified version of the last Golf GTI’s EA113 2.0-litre with direct injection, will have over 260bhp and replaces the six-cylinder R32.

Unlike the front-drive Scirocco R, the range-topping Golf will have four-wheel drive. It should crack 60mph in less than six seconds and hit an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

Previous spy shots have revealed none of the aggressive styling features of the new R20, but these pics clearly show the extended side sills and gaping intakes in the front bumper.

The lower section of the nose will be very similar to the Scirocco R’s, which also shares the engine and mechanicals. Twin exhausts at the rear ape the look of the R32 and the bumper is extended.

Lowered suspension, different dampers and new springs will help the R20’s handling, along with a reworked version of Volkswagen’s Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC).

The car is expected to be displayed at the Frankfurt motor show next month.
